This course is designed to open the students' minds to the field of chemistry. This introductory chemistry course will allow students to investigate and establish a strong interest into the fundamentals of not only chemistry but other S.T.E.M. fields as well. Daily laboratory activities will provide great hands-on experience for such topics as chemical reactions, state changes of matter, acid and base chemistry, and much more. Students will be introduced to the Periodic Table of Elements in a fashion that will enable them to utilize it in future classes and in other aspects of their everyday lives. All skill levels are welcome to participate in this course as projects are oriented towards exploration and creativity rather than technical ability or routine memorization. If you want a fun challenge, this class is for you! This course falls under the Communication, Critical Thinking and Personal and Social Institutional Level Outcomes.
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Develop valuable critical thinking skills in which they will be able to gather, organize, and analyze data from various sources and apply that to their own projects
- Define terminology of chemistry as it relates to class lectures and activities
- Decipher physical and chemical changes and reactions from laboratory activities
- Students will be able to relate and distinguish the contents of the Period Table when doing laboratory experiments
