Healthy Cooking for Kids is a culinary arts class designed for students 3rd to 8th grade. Students will have a fun time doing hands-on learning in a professional teaching kitchen. Participants will learn the basic principles of food preparation, learning recipes, food identification, food safety and sanitation, as well as the use and identification of kitchen tools and equipment. This course falls under the Communication, Critical Thinking and Personal and Social Institutional Level Outcomes. No previous experience necessary to be successful in this class.
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of essentials of food preparation: ingredient identification, knife cutting techniques and creating a food production schedule
- Demonstrate knowledge and ability to properly use large and small kitchen equipment
- Demonstrate the ability to efficiently and safely produce food
- Demonstrate knowledge of proper food standards and cooking methods of meats, poultry, fish/shellfish, vegetables, and starches
