This hands-on course incorporates various areas of STEM. There are two main areas of study that we will be working in: Pure Chemistry, which is the study of atoms, elements, and molecules, etc. and how they are combined to form compounds, substances, or other materials. We will also study Applied Chemistry, which is the use of the information found in pure chemistry to solve problems or to achieve a specific desired result. Our activities will include reactions, acids and bases, states of matter, and more. All labs are kitchen-safe types of reactions that will be fun and memorable for the students. This course falls under the Communication, Critical Thinking and Personal and Social Institutional Level Outcomes.
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to understand:
- Physical and chemical changes during reactions from laboratory activities
- The elements of the Period Table, and the properties and interactions of molecules, as well as solids, liquids and gases.
- How the principles and theories of chemistry can be applied to answer a question or solve a real-world problem
