This hands-on course incorporates various areas of STEM. Areas of study include designing and building airplanes and rockets and their aerodynamic features, the physics of flight, and the conservation of energy and momentum. Students will be building a variety of projects including airplanes, rockets, and rollercoasters. Participants will also discover how and why design affects the motion of each vehicle or projectile, and how forces are managed and balanced to create the desired effects of motion. This course falls under the Communication, Critical Thinking and Personal and Social Institutional Level Outcomes.
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to understand:
- Newton's three laws of motion, and how they apply to movement and flight
- The interaction of potential and kinetic energy, as well as momentum
- The balance of lift, weight, thrust, and drag, and how speed and air pressure create the force of lift on an aircraft
