This class is an introduction of algebraic concepts covered in grades 3rd thru 5th. Emphasis will be placed on concepts at the 4th grade level, as outlined in the California Department of Education Math Content Standards. Students will be introduced to algebraic terminology, mathematical symbolic systems and tools, variables, equations, and word problems, focusing on algebraic relations and notations. Students will practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of positive and negative integers, fractions, ratios, proportion, prime and composite numbers and the decimal system (i.e. place value), using various methods. Additionally, students will work with algebraic notation, functions, tables, graphs and equations to solve algebraic mathematical problems. Students should know their multiplication tables.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:
Represent the algebraic relations when evaluating positive and negative fractions.
Set up a table using functions; solve functions using more than one positive or negative integer.
Read and translate algebraic terminology to set up and solve an algebraic notation.
