Playing Stories: Writing Through Gameplay 3rd - 5th Grade

This course is designed to help students develop socially and critically. In small cooperative groups students will learn how to play Dungeons & Dragons and other RPGs to develop cooperation skills, practice leadership roles, and grow self-esteem. After solving the puzzles presented through gameplay, students will learn how to design and lead their own game adventures by creating thoughtful challenges and engaging worlds for their classmates. This course emphasizes critical thinking, creative writing, reading and comprehension, public speaking, social studies, probabilities, and social interaction through academically-oriented gaming.   No prior experience is necessary for this course.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Create dynamic fictional characters with backgrounds, personalities, and motivations.
  • Design and lead others through gameplay challenges.
  • Communicate and negotiate effectively as part of a team.
  • Speak confidently in front of small groups.
